      And I take Fearguth and SEC’s point– Archie could be seen as a tolerable legacy of his upbringing whereas Breitfart is another whole kettle of stinking fish, twisting a story of personal redemption to serve the right wing’s anti-Obama agenda.

      Here’s something I just posted in the comments section at The Big Orange that seems on point. The subject is the recent poll by the NY Times about the makeup of the Tea Party. It begins with a quote from the author of the diary:

      It could be that I’m being irrational expecting everyone to be rational.

      Well, there’s your problem right there.

      There’s an old saying in politics: Perception is reality, for which there is now ample neurocognitive evidence. (Lakoff,Westen,Welach)

      Propagandizing health insurance reform is a case in point. As you indicate, a far greater number of whites will benefit from it than blacks. But with the country’s largest 24 hour television network and 90% of talk radio blaring out fact free and highly emotional propaganda to a large audience of anxious, fearful, and to a significant extent, racist individuals, the poll’s results are hardly surprising.

      For those with racist predilections, Fux and friends succeeded in associating reform with the term reparations, cast as a sneaky back door way for the nation’s first black president to help his people “get even” (and how unfair is that?) For the rest, there’s Frank Luntz’s favorite boogey man phrase government takeover.

      What better example of marrying the two winger memes than to quote that great pioneer of racial justice, Mel Gibson. From his film Braveheart:

      I am William Wallace. And, I see a whole army of my country men, here in defiance of tyranny. You’ve come to fight as freemen, and freemen you are. What will you do without freedom?! Will you fight?

      Man: No . . . we will run . . . and we will live.

      William Wallace: Aye. Fight and you may die. Run and you’ll live, at least a while. And, dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance — just one chance — to come back here and tell our enemies, that they may take our lives, but they’ll never take our freedom!

    I have to second what Fearguth said. Archie Bunker was representative of the product of his times. That being said he still had some decency and some ethics. Breitbart–not so much. But then it’s easy to get confused between a Curmudgeon and a Mysanthrope.
