At a time of national desperation– the economy teetering on the brink of another Great Depression, two runious foreign wars and occupations, a demoralized citizenry who knew in their guts that they were being ripped off by a greedy, shadowy ruling class– we were more than ready for radical change.
We needed a courageous general to confront the individuals and institutions that brought the country to its knees. A leader steeped in the political wisdom of a Marcus Aurelius, capable of winning the crowd, of leading the populace to intellligent, dynamic action.
Oliver Reed as Maximus’ gladiatorial tutor, Proximo: “Win the crowd and you will win your freedom!”
And ours…
We needed Maximus to fight to the death for the middle class in D.C. Coliseum. Instead, we got Pee Wee Herman.
Won’t get fooled again.
Yep, Peewee Herman for sure.
I look at Obama as Mr. Rogers.
He thinks the GOP wants to be his neighbor.
That’s for sure!
