Jon Stewart suffering whiplash from the Gaffe Wars
Twenty four years ago, columnist Michael Kinsley wrote:
“A gaffe is when a politician tells the truth – some obvious truth he isn’t supposed to say.”
True enough. But what has changed since then is the sheer velocity at which gaffes travel through the Interwebs, especially the Twitterverse. And then how quickly, in this election year, they become embedded in negative campaign ads of every stripe.
In between, the Gaffe Wars provide our bobble-headed Punditariat with endless opportunities to inflict upon the rest of us their expert instant play by play analysis of what each gaffe supposedly means. Meanwhile, discussion of critical issues facing the country get barely a mention, let alone the in-depth analysis they deserve.
Hats off to Stewart and his staff for skewering this deplorable trend.
