Back from a two week vacation, Stephen Colbert weighs in on the Shirley Sherrod libel, cats that look like Hitler, and an Andrew Breitbart style mashup of the State Department’s resident genocidal maniac, Hilary Clinton.

On the day before Arizona‘s new immigration law SB 1070 goes into effect,  U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton struck down its most onerous  ‘Vhere are your papers?” provisions:

The provisions that angered opponents will not take effect, including sections that required officers to check a person’s immigration status while enforcing other laws.

The judge also delayed parts of the law that required immigrants to carry their papers at all times, and made it illegal for undocumented workers to solicit employment in public places – a move aimed at day laborers. In addition, the judge blocked officers from making warrantless arrests of suspected illegal immigrants.

“Requiring Arizona law enforcement officials and agencies to determine the immigration status of every person who is arrested burdens lawfully-present aliens because their liberty will be restricted while their status is checked,” Bolton, a Clinton appointee, said in her decision.

The fundraising event, billed as an “Election Countdown,” will take place from August 12-14 in Beverly Hills, California, and will also feature other politicians such as California Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, and Nevada Republican gubernatorial nominee Brian Sandoval. Steele and Breitbart are scheduled to co-headline a welcome reception on the first evening, August 12.

Too bad I’ll be out of town that week or I’d be tempted to crash it just to see if Not-so-Breitbart orders Michael Steele to bring him a mint julep.
